about

“They sang songs to help gain freedom, now we act like we don’t need them...”

~”Where Have Our Songs Gone?”

In the moments when spirits and voices grew weary from the chants and cries of protest, silencing the song would not have stopped neither the struggle nor the suffering...so they would continue to sing. Not every song was one of protest. Some songs were for the internal resolve and self-empowerment. These songs were used for hope and instruction. The seemingly mythological place called Heaven was really a physical reality of freedom, disguised in double entendre. So they sang: “Come and go to that land where I’m bound...”

And so I sing: “Take my hand, let me lead the way. I’m sick of this reality, let’s just escape.”

It is directly influenced by and in tribute to the pulse and drive of Motown, the grit and passion of Stax, and the faith of black gospel music. It is the sum of numerous experiences, perspectives and backgrounds put into a room with a singular desire to execute a musical vision. It is a reminder of what happens when black and white musicians are intentional about not forgetting nor forsaking the current climate and the things that provide challenges, but rather attack them head on with fervent empathy. Of the 20 people credited with creating this art, the racial divide is split almost evenly, yet the goal is common: to see the fantasy of unity, equality, liberty and justice come to fruition.

“Let’s hurry, ain’t no need for us to wait...come go with me.”

“Come Go With Me"
Words & Music by Michael B. Hicks
Michael B. Hicks Music, BMI

Take my hand, let me lead the way (come go with me)
I'm sick of this reality, let's just escape (come go with me)

A place where it’s ok to just be ourselves
And we ain’t gotta worry ‘bout tryna please nobody else
We won’t be pressured into lives of conformity
It's a place where there's no bigotry or brutality

Take my hand, let me lead the way (come go with me)
I'm sick of this reality, let's just escape (come go with me)
Follow me, I'm dreaming of this perfect place (come go with me)
Let’s hurry, ain’t no need for us to wait (come go with me)

A place not governed by pride and greed
A place where nobody lives in poverty--and everybody's water is clean
A place where the goal of life ain’t this pseudo-fame
A place where money ain’t ev'rythang—love’s the name of the game

Take my hand, let me lead the way (come go with me)
I'm sick of this reality, let's just escape (come go with me)
Follow me, I'm dreaming of this perfect place (come go with me)
Let’s hurry, ain’t no need to wait (come go with me)

We’ll honor humility, while living peacefully,
Laughing happily, while chasing equality
Singing love’s harmony, come and go with me

Take my hand, let me lead the way (come go with me)
I'm sick of this reality, let's just escape (come go with me)
Follow me, I'm dreaming of this perfect place (come go with me)
Let’s hurry, ain’t no need to wait (come go with me)
